Shipyards were a big business in the Hoogezand region in Nico Bulder’s days. Even today, a number of shipyards still exist that manufacture specialty ships and coastal trading vessels also called coasters. As these ships are shallow-hulled they can be built and launched in the relatively shallow canals in the area. Most shipyards are concentrated along the “Winschoterdiep” canal. Nico Bulder started his career as a draftsman on one of these shipyards. As evidenced by his work, he never lost the love and skills to draw old and new ships alike. This gallery will bring all Nico Bulder’s nautical art together for your viewing pleasure. The aquarelles are from the collection in the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum in Groningen.
